ESL Classes

Somerville Public Library, in conjunction with the Borough of Somerville’s Recreation Department and Van Derveer Elementary School, offer English as a Second Language courses to adult Somerville area residents. A bilingual Homework Club is also offered to Van Derveer school students in grades 1-5.

Both of these classes are held at Van Derveer Elementary School during the public school calendar year. The adult ESL class is held on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 PM. The after school homework club is held Tuesdays & Thursdays 3-4pm. Pre-registration is required and a small fee is charged for both programs.

The Jointure

Literacy Volunteers

of Somerset County

Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County (LVSC) is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, a non-profit organization that promotes literacy through a network of community volunteer programs.

LVSC provides free, one-to-one and small group tutoring to functionally illiterate adults through a network of volunteers trained in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

LVSC recruits and trains volunteer tutors who are matched with adult students.

LVSC's student-centered program helps adults:

  • read to their children
  • enter high school equivalency programs
  • complete job applications
  • register to vote
  • get a driver's license
  • become US citizens
  • understand job-related materials
  • attend college and job training programs
  • manage checking accounts
  • read maps, menus and street signs
