Youth Services Librarian

The Red Bank Public Library is seeking an outgoing, dynamic, enthusiastic, youth services professional to lead our youth services team and provide quality services to a diverse population of children and young adults pre-school through age 17.   

The youth services librarian will work to:

·         Build and maintain collection of books, periodicals and audio-visual materials relevant to the needs of Red Bank’s diverse community

·         Design, promote, execute, and evaluate programs for children of all ages (including those with special needs), such as story times, book talks, activity programs, summer reading clubs, and book discussion group

·         Supervise work of Children's and Young Adult Assistants.

·         Develop partnerships with schools, community organizations and the private sector in order to foster and nurture a lifelong love of reading. 

Requires strong communication and social skills, along with a commitment to high quality and innovative library service, Warmth and enthusiasm, with special sensitivity to customs and culture of a diverse population are a must. 

Fluency in Spanish highly desirable for this position.

REQUIREMENTS:

Masters Degree in Library Science. 

Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree, professional experience working with children, plus credits earned toward a Masters in Library Science Degree in an ALA recognized program or a Bachelor’s Degree plus demonstrated excellence in collection development and program planning for children and young adults in a public library may be considered. 

HOURS

35 hours/week.  Inclusive of one evening a week and one out of three Saturdays required.  Exclusive of one hour lunch/dinner break.  

COMPENSATION:

Will meet the 2009 NJLA minimum for individuals with MLS (Masters in Library Science) Degree and training and experience in Youth Services.  $49,286.00  

Compensation for persons not holding MLS to be based on the Administrative Assistant-Bookkeeper schedule in the collective bargaining agreement with CWA Local 1034 commensurate with experience.

Business Manager/Bookkeeper  

As assistant to the Library Director, works independently and with considerable responsibility in all aspects of Library Administration.   Is responsible for the day-to-day running of library support services, i.e. those activities not directly overseen by the library’s professional, tech services or circulation staff.     

Requires strong organizational, bookkeeping and communications skills.  Very strong word processing, spreadsheets and other office applications required. Knowledge of or ability to learn: QuickBooks, New Jersey municipal purchasing procedures and knowledge of book, periodical and electronic database ordering procedures.   

Performs some customer service related work, including working on the library circulation or reference desks as scheduled.  Ability to communicate in Spanish a plus but not necessary for this position.  Flexibility, a sense of humor and a can do attitude are musts.

 REQUIREMENTS

 Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, plus minimum one year of administrative experience in a business or government agency with responsibility for assisting in the  direction and/or coordination of personnel, fiscal affairs,  office administration, and other support services.  Public library experience a plus but not required for this position.   Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience as indicated above on a year for year basis.

Library Assistant/Young Adult Outreach  

Dynamic, tech- savvy individual to perform general circulation and customer service duties for patrons of all ages as well as develop and manage services to library patrons ages 12-17.  

Creativity, flexibility, tact, attention to detail and a strong desire to work to expand library services to young adults ages 12-18 required.  Strong communication and customer service skills a must.  

Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish highly desirable but not required for this position.  

HOURS

+ / - 25 hours/week.  Some evenings & Saturdays required 

 SALARY:   Salary commensurate with training and experience.
